Crochet Spring Time Hot Pad

This Spring Time Hot Pad is a fun and easy way to add some colour to your kitchen and make a useful pot holder at the same time! This crochet pattern is a simple 4 row repeat consisting of single crochet and spike stitches – perfect for beginners and more advanced crocheters alike. To make this hot pad I used two strands of King Cole Cottonsoft DK cotton yarn held together in the colours Apricot and Ecru. This results in a hot pad of decent thickness which is essential to keep out the heat when handling hot pots and pans in the kitchen!

Two strands of DK yarn held together have the same weight as a single strand of aran/worsted weight yarn and the latter can easily be substituted instead. In fact I also made another very similar hot pad, the Zebra Hot Pad, using Drops Paris aran yarn – the result is a hot pad of similar thickness and size. You can use any colours you like to make this hot pad – just have fun with it! Materials:

• King Cole Cottonsoft DK in Apricot and Ecru (1 skein of each colour) – any DK weight cotton yarn will work
• Size G (4.00mm) crochet hook
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle

Pattern notes:

• ch – chain
• st – stitch
• sl st – slip stitch
• sc – single crochet
• spike stitch – insert hook in the row below the sc stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through.

This pattern is worked with two strands of yarn held together.

To avoid having many ends to weave in, simply carry the yarn up the side of the hot pad. The colour changes will be hidden under the border once the hot pad is complete.

Written in US terminology.

Hot pad measures about 8 x 8 inches (20 x 20 cm). Size may vary depending on yarn, hook and tension used.

Pattern:

With two strands of Apricot yarn held together, ch 30.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (29 sts), ch1 and turn.

Row 2-4: Repeat row 1 and at the end of row 4 join in the Ecru yarn, ch1 and turn.

Row 5: *Sc in 1st st, spike stitch in the next st, repeat from * across, ending with a sc in the last st, ch 1 and turn.

Rows 6-8: Sc across, ch1 and turn. At the end of row 8 join in the Apricot yarn and ch1.

Rows 9-12: Repeat rows 5-8 with Apricot yarn and join in Ecru yarn at end of row 12.

Rows 13-16: Repeat rows 5-8 with Ecru yarn and join in Apricot yarn at end of row 16.

Rows 17-20: Repeat rows 5-8 with Apricot yarn and join in Ecru yarn at end of row 20.

Rows 21-24: Repeat rows 5-8 with Ecru yarn and join in Apricot yarn at end of row 24.

Rows 25-28: Repeat rows 5-8 with Apricot yarn and join in Ecru yarn at end of row 28.

Rows 29-32: Repeat rows 5-8 with Ecru yarn and join in Apricot yarn at end of row 32.

Rows 33-36: Repeat rows 5-8 with Apricot yarn and at the end of row 36 fasten off.

Border – Worked in two rounds around the hot pad.

Round 1: Join with the Ecru yarn at the 1st st where you fastened off with the Apricot yarn. Work a sc stitch in each st around the hot pad, working 3 sc sts in each corner. On the sides where the colour changes occur try to stitch about 29 sc stitches in total on each side – this will prevent your work from curling. At the end, join and ch1.

Round 2: Work sc sts around the hot pad, working 3 sc sts in each corner. When you reach the last st in the round, join with a sl st and fasten off.

Loop

In the top right-hand corner st, join in the Ecru yarn with a sl st, ch 15 and sl st back into the same corner stitch. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
